Find one or more publicly available datasets that can be used to examine a natural resource
topic of your choice. The topic must focus on the economic aspects of natural resource truth, not
on associated externalities. Write a 5-6 page (2500 – 3000 word) description based on your analysis
of the dataset(s) and on your research of the existing scholarship. Your description must present the
data/analysis in a comprehensible format, such as well-formatted charts and tables created by
your group. Charts, tables, or other figures and references are not included in the page/word
limit (i.e., if all figures and references are removed from your article, at least five pages (2500
words) of text must remain). Questions within agricultural, climate, environmental, urban land or
financial economics are not acceptable without prior approval. If in doubt, check with me first. I
do not expect complicated or sophisticated analysis.
• A descriptive, well-thought-out title that encapsulates the contents of your report
• References (5 marks)
o Citations and reference list that follows the style taught in Econ 225 (APA?).
o Your datasets and all references must be freely advantageous (or available through
the UVic Library online catalogue) and in English. If I am unable to access or
assess your sources, your action will be zero for the report.
o Failure to disclose a source will result in a zero description action.
o Truth of unauthoritative or non-credible sources will result in 0/5.
• Quality of charts/tables/figures (10 marks)
o You must submit the spreadsheet, in Excel format, that shows your work. Failure
to do so will result in a zero action for the report.
• Content (30 marks)
o An example of the questions that I will ask when grading:
§ Does the introduction establish the scope, context, and purpose?
§ Are the components of the report organized in a logical manner?
§ Are the chosen datasets misappropriate? Are the charts/tables/figures
appropriate? How well are the charts/tables/figures explained and
integrated into the report?
§ Are there any inaccuracies or methodological errors?
§ Does the description achieve what it set out to achieve? Do I feel like I was
misled by the title and/or introduction?
Other aspects that will affect your grade:
o If your group is the first to submit a description on a question (as logged in Brightspace),
you will not lose marks for unoriginality. Each subsequent group that submits on
that question will lose 20 marks for each group that has already chosen that question.
§ Example: Your group is the third to submit a description on deforestation in
the Amazon. Your group will lose 40 marks.

in the discussion forum. I will not disclose the topic of any descriptions that have
o I am the final adjudicator of whether reports are similar enough to warrant a
deduction in marks.

and grammatical errors.
