Lack of sleep leads to fatigue that makes it difficult to retrieve information from the brain. Stress distracts people from focusing on specific matters, making it challenging to remember some things. HIV AIDS, Syphilis, and tuberculosis can also contribute to loss of memory.
Blockage or leakage of blood vessels transporting blood to the brain can cause a stroke. It makes a person remember childhood memories vividly and forget recent events such as what they had for breakfast. Unlike memory loss during old age, dementia affects the ability to carry out specific tasks such as home chores. It leads to a continuous loss of memory.
Both long term and short term memory loss are treatable. The underlying issue determines what type of medication a patient receives. Health providers should change the prescription if medication is causing memory loss. The nutritional supplements aid in recovering from memory loss caused by nutritional deficiency.
If depression is the underlying cause, then the medical practitioner should offer drugs to curtail it. As for patients who have lost their memory due to stroke, physical exercise is essential. The Department of Health and Human Services recommends adults to engage in aerobics for 150 minutes every week. People who are physically active recover faster from memory loss caused by stroke.
It is also essential to remain mentally active by engaging in activities such as playing chess and cross puzzles. In case the memory loss is caused by other illnesses such as syphilis, the patient should take medication to cure the disease. Rehearsing information in your own words and leaving reminders at different places can also reduce memory loss.
