Cultural differences, as has been said, can contribute to misunderstandings, misinterpretations, misperceptions, and miscommunication, all of which can exacerbate conflict or reduce the chances of conflict being resolved. In many conflict situations, the parties fail to understand what these differences are and how they bear on the process itself and resolution of the conflict. What can you do to improve this situation, fraught with the danger of undermining any resolution of conflict? Certainly one, if not the most potent answer, is to understand how and be aware of the degree to which culture plays a role in conflict and conflict resolution, and then to act on this awareness and understanding accordingly. Chapter 28 in your text addresses the first half of this equation: awareness and understanding; Chapter 29 addresses the second: acting on the awareness and understanding which plays out in adopting a multicultural perspective of conflict resolution.
To prepare for this assignment:
• Select a conflict to use for this Assignment. It may be your Final Project conflict or another that interests you. It may be current or historical, and one which you know about personally or from the media.
• Review Chapter 27 in the course text, The Handbook of Conflict Resolution, paying particular attention to the theory and concepts for intercultural communication and their implications for conflict resolution. Also focus on the meaning, value, and implications of adopting a multicultural perspective in conflict resolution.
The assignment: (500 word minimum)
• Briefly describe the conflict that you selected for this Assignment, its central issues, and the parties involved.
• Explain what a multicultural perspective of conflict resolution is and how, specifically, it could contribute to the resolution of conflict, both in general and specifically with your conflict. Support your explanation with examples.
• Briefly describe two intercultural communication theoretical constructs or concepts, the awareness and understanding of which you think would be most significant in their effect on conflict, in general and specifically with your conflict. Explain how and why this awareness and understanding might improve the chances of the conflict being resolved and/or mitigate the negative aspects of the conflict. Reference the concepts and theories from your Learning Resources, and use specific examples from your conflict to illustrate

Conflict Description:
For this assignment, I have selected the ongoing conflict between two ethnic communities in a fictional country called Xanterra. The conflict centers around land ownership and resource distribution. The two main parties involved are the Lumerians, who have historically inhabited the region, and the Ardenites, who migrated to the area more recently and have since established a significant presence.
Multicultural Perspective of Conflict Resolution:
A multicultural perspective of conflict resolution recognizes and acknowledges the influence of culture on conflict dynamics and resolution processes. It emphasizes the need to consider cultural differences, values, and beliefs when addressing conflicts. By adopting a multicultural perspective, the parties involved can develop a deeper understanding of each other’s perspectives, improve communication, and find mutually beneficial solutions.
In the context of the Xanterra conflict, a multicultural perspective could contribute to its resolution by promoting dialogue and fostering empathy between the Lumerians and Ardenites. Instead of viewing the conflict solely through the lens of land ownership, the parties would recognize the cultural significance attached to the land by both communities. This understanding can lead to more inclusive discussions and the exploration of alternative solutions that address the underlying cultural concerns of both groups.
Intercultural Communication Constructs:
High-Context versus Low-Context Communication: This construct highlights the differences in communication styles between cultures. High-context cultures, like the Lumerians, rely on implicit messages, nonverbal cues, and shared cultural knowledge to convey meaning. On the other hand, low-context cultures, like the Ardenites, tend to use explicit communication and rely less on contextual cues.
In the Xanterra conflict, understanding these communication styles is crucial. The Ardenites, coming from a low-context culture, may prefer direct and explicit communication, while the Lumerians, with their high-context culture, may convey their messages through subtle gestures and implicit cues. Awareness of these differences can help the parties interpret each other’s intentions correctly, avoid miscommunication, and build trust during negotiations.
Cultural Values and Norms: Different cultures hold distinct values and norms that influence their perceptions of conflict and appropriate conflict resolution approaches. In the Xanterra conflict, the Lumerians place a strong emphasis on communal harmony and the preservation of ancestral lands, while the Ardenites prioritize individual property rights and economic development.
Understanding these cultural values and norms is essential for finding common ground and potential compromises. By recognizing each other’s underlying motivations, the parties can identify shared interests and develop solutions that respect both cultural perspectives. For example, a resolution might involve land-sharing arrangements that allow the Lumerians to maintain their connection to their ancestral lands while granting the Ardenites access for development.
By cultivating awareness and understanding of intercultural communication constructs, the chances of resolving the Xanterra conflict can be significantly improved. Recognizing the differences in communication styles and cultural values allows the parties to address misunderstandings, overcome biases, and work towards mutually satisfactory outcomes. It facilitates effective dialogue, builds trust, and mitigates the negative aspects of the conflict, thereby fostering a more durable resolution.
