Factors Influencing the Poor Quality of Life among Patients Living with Chronic Disease

Factors Influencing the Poor Quality of Life among Patients Living with Chronic Disease

Chronic diseases are long-term health conditions that persist for more than three months and require ongoing medical attention or limit daily activities. Examples of chronic diseases include diabetes, heart disease, cancer, arthritis, and asthma. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), chronic diseases are the leading cause of death and disability worldwide, accounting for 71% of all deaths in 2019. Chronic diseases not only affect the physical health of patients, but also their psychological and social well-being. This paper will discuss some of the factors that influence the poor quality of life among patients living with chronic disease.

One of the factors that affects the quality of life of chronic disease patients is the burden of symptoms. Symptoms such as pain, fatigue, breathlessness, nausea, and depression can interfere with daily functioning and reduce the enjoyment of life. Moreover, symptoms can vary in intensity and frequency, making it difficult for patients to predict and manage their condition. A study by Smith et al. (2020) found that symptom burden was associated with lower physical and mental health-related quality of life among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a common respiratory disorder.

Another factor that influences the quality of life of chronic disease patients is the impact of treatment. Treatment for chronic diseases often involves taking medications, undergoing procedures, or making lifestyle changes. These interventions can have side effects, costs, and inconveniences that affect the patient’s satisfaction and adherence. For instance, a study by Karamanidou et al. (2019) showed that patients with rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic inflammatory disease, experienced difficulties in coping with the adverse effects of biologic drugs, such as infections, injection site reactions, and anxiety. Furthermore, treatment can impose restrictions on the patient’s autonomy and social participation, such as limiting their mobility, diet, or leisure activities.

A third factor that affects the quality of life of chronic disease patients is the level of social support. Social support refers to the availability and quality of interpersonal relationships that provide emotional, informational, or practical assistance to individuals facing stressors. Social support can buffer the negative effects of chronic disease by enhancing coping skills, self-esteem, and sense of belonging. However, some patients may lack adequate social support due to isolation, stigma, or communication barriers. A study by Alshammari et al. (2021) found that low social support was associated with poor quality of life among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Saudi Arabia.

In conclusion, this paper has discussed some of the factors that influence the poor quality of life among patients living with chronic disease. These factors include the burden of symptoms, the impact of treatment, and the level of social support. Understanding these factors can help health care providers and policymakers design interventions that address the holistic needs of chronic disease patients and improve their well-being.
