For this assignment, you will create a historical narrative focused on a significant event or group of people from the period between 1492-1875 in what is now the United States. This is your opportunity to bring history to life through vivid storytelling grounded in factual research.

Choose one of the following prompts as the basis for your narrative:

The Narrative of English Colonization: Examine the motives and rationalization behind the English colonization efforts in the Americas beginning in the 16th century. How were the indigenous inhabitants dehumanized and displaced to make way for colonial expansion? Explore the legacy of this period.
The Arrival of Enslaved Africans in 1619: Recount the circumstances that led to the forced migration of Africans to the Virginia colony in 1619. Give voice to their stories, their resistance, and the indelible impact they had on the nation’s development.
Bacon’s Rebellion and the Codification of Racial Slavery: Analyze how the aftermath of Bacon’s Rebellion in 1676 reshaped the institution of slavery and the legal construction of whiteness. Why do these consequences still reverberate today?
The Rise of Jim Crow: Shed light on the establishment of legalized racial segregation and discrimination known as “Jim Crow” in the post-Reconstruction South and its effects nationwide. Examine its modern-day manifestations.
The Mexican-American War: Investigate the motivations behind the U.S. invasion of Mexico in 1846 and the Mexican-American communities’ acts of resilience and resistance in the Southwest before and after the war. How did this conflict shape their experiences?

Grapple with the forces of dehumanization, oppression and the remarkable resilience required for survival. Draw from factual research but feel free to employ creative storytelling techniques to bring these histories into powerful focus.

Why did the Mexican-American War occur, what were the motivations behind it and how did Mexicans in the Southwest show resilience and resistance? What happened after the war to these Mexicans? Why does it still matter today?
This will be told with accurate historical details about the lives and perspectives of the people you are focusing on and please make sure to reflect on their dehumanization, oppression, and the will and resilience to survive.
