The shipping industry faces unique safety challenges due to hazardous operating environments and the potential for severe accidents. Security threats are an ongoing concern for ports and vessels. Advanced technologies now aid in monitoring facilities, screening vessels and detecting anomalies (Bichou and Bell, 2018). For example, some ports use drones, sensors and analytics to continuously scan for hazards, unauthorized access or suspicious activities. This enhances situational awareness compared to traditional patrol-based methods. Sharing intelligence between authorities also strengthens defenses against evolving threats like piracy and terrorism.
Finally, safety culture refers to an organization’s priorities, values and style of decision-making regarding hazards and risk-taking (Ek, Runefors & Borell, 2014). A positive culture promotes proactive identification and mitigation of risks before incidents occur. Leaders must emphasize safety’s importance through actions, not just policies. Crew should feel comfortable reporting hazards without fear of punishment to facilitate continuous improvement. Training programs that build shared understanding of risks can reinforce a culture where safety comes before production pressures or schedules.
Maritime safety relies on effective risk management across technical, operational and cultural dimensions. Ongoing analysis of past incidents, compliance with international standards, emergency preparedness, security coordination and fostering a robust safety mindset are all important practices. Advances in technology and data-driven solutions also show promise in further strengthening risk controls and situational awareness in the complex maritime domain.
