A third challenge is the lack of a cohesive strategy to align physical and digital healthcare infrastructure. Many countries have recognized the potential of digital health to improve health outcomes, reduce costs, and enhance patient experience. However, digital health requires not only investment in software and hardware, but also in the underlying physical infrastructure that supports it. This includes adequate broadband connectivity, data storage and security, interoperability standards, power backup systems, and user training. Without a holistic approach to integrate physical and digital healthcare infrastructure, countries may not be able to realize the full benefits of digital transformation.

To address these challenges, countries need to adopt a strategic vision and a long-term plan for healthcare infrastructure development. This plan should consider the current and future needs of the population, the available resources and capacities, the best practices and innovations from other countries or sectors, and the potential impact of climate change and other environmental factors. The plan should also involve collaboration among various stakeholders, including health care providers, policymakers, architects, engineers, contractors, suppliers, patients, and communities.

Some examples of actions that countries can take to improve their healthcare infrastructure are:

– Conducting regular assessments and audits of existing healthcare facilities to identify gaps and priorities for maintenance or upgrading.
– Developing standards and guidelines for designing or renovating healthcare facilities that incorporate digital health solutions, patient-centered care principles, environmental sustainability practices, and disaster preparedness measures.
– Allocating sufficient funds for healthcare infrastructure projects and ensuring transparency and accountability in their implementation and evaluation.
– Leveraging public-private partnerships or other innovative financing mechanisms to mobilize additional resources for healthcare infrastructure development.
– Promoting research and innovation in healthcare infrastructure design and management to foster creativity and efficiency.
– Engaging with local communities and civil society organizations to ensure that healthcare infrastructure projects are responsive to their needs and preferences.

Healthcare infrastructure is a key determinant of health system performance and population health. By investing in healthcare infrastructure development, countries can enhance their resilience to health shocks, improve their quality of care delivery, and achieve their health goals.
