Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) are highly skilled and educated healthcare professionals who play a vital role in the delivery of healthcare. APRNs have a wide range of responsibilities, including diagnosing and treating patients, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, and prescribing medications.
The roles and responsibilities of APRNs in prescribing vary from state to state. In some states, APRNs have full prescriptive authority, meaning they can prescribe medications without the supervision of a physician. In other states, APRNs must have a collaborative practice agreement (CPA) with a physician in order to prescribe medications.
A CPA is a written agreement between an APRN and a physician that outlines the scope of practice for the APRN. The CPA typically includes provisions for communication, consultation, and referral between the APRN and the physician.
When prescribing medications, APRNs are responsible for following the same standards of care as physicians. This includes assessing the patient’s medical history, performing a physical exam, and considering the patient’s individual needs when selecting a medication. APRNs are also responsible for monitoring the patient’s response to medication and making adjustments to the medication regimen as needed.
