PSC5007 Assignment Brief
Information on Stalking
For this report you will be asked to produce a report on Stalking Myths. A few general
information about stalking, in 2013/14 CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) figures reveal
that 743 stalking offences were prosecuted whereas 9.792 were prosecuted for
harassment out of the 61.175 allegations recorded by police. Therefore only 1% of cases
of stalking and 16% of cases of harassment recorded by the police result in a charge
and prosecution by the CPS (Paladin, National Stalking Advocacy Service, 2015).
If the CPS does not prosecute the case the victim can take the defendant to civil court
for stalking, either to get financial compensation or a restraining order. This action does
not mean that the restraining order or the financial compensation will be about stalking
in most cases it is for harassment. Stalking myths are dysfunctional, stereotypical, and
false beliefs of what stalking is, who are the stalkers, how it effects the victims, the
behaviours that are associated with it and the true nature of crime (Pylarinou, 2020)
The numbers above give you an indication on how difficult it is to prosecute stalking
in the UK. Researching Stalking Myths can provide us with important information on
how to help police investigations on stalking be more effective, and what necessary
measures can be put into effect so the legal process can prosecute stalking more
efficiently.
Data Analysis
You can choose what elements of the data to analyse for your report. You can examine
the relationships between Independent Variables such as age group, level of education
etc and the Dependent Variables that you will use such as the SMA (Stalking Myth
Acceptance) total score, SMA nuisance, SMA flattery and SMA Victim Blame. The
Dependent Variables will be grouped for you so you do not have to worry about that.
Some important information do not write the report in the first person (for example I
carried out this research), you will assume your data set is normally distributed.
You need to carry out a one-way ANOVA for this research, you are also advised to
conduct a t-test on gender differences so you can compare your results with other in the
area of Stalking. The data analysis will be conducted in class using the Assignment
Worksheet.
Stalking Myth Scale
It has 34 questions, and it was developed by McKeon, Mullen & Ogloff (unpublished)
Seven items in the “stalking is a nuisance,” theme with a Cronbach’s α= .80 theme, six
items in the “stalking is flattery,” with a Cronbach’s α= .85 and six items in the
“blaming the victim,” with a Cronbach’s α= .79 theme. Overall, the Cronbach’s alpha
for the Stalking Myth Acceptance scale was Cronbach’s α= .91.
General Information:
When you see these abbreviations in your data they mean the following:
SMA= Stalking Myth Acceptance
Some information on what I did to the data, the Stalking Myth Scale has three subscales the
questions are separated into, when you see in your dataset SMA Flattery these are the total
scores to the corresponding questions on flattery. I did the same for SMA Victim Blame and
SMA Nuisance. SMA Total scores are the participants overall score on this scale.
Literature Review
Three important articles will be provided to you to read, and you can use them as a
starting point for your literature review they are all related to Stalking Myths. At the
end of this sheet, you will also find my PhD as a reference to use as an extra comparison
for your analysis especially for the ANOVA results. DO NOT directly copy
information from there, or any of the analysis as there are parts that are not related to
your report.
Thematic Analysis
In this report you will also have to carry out a small Thematic Analysis on the data
(extracts) that will be collected in the classroom from all the Level 5 Students. (see
the relevant slides with regards to the thematic analysis process).
Draft
You will have the opportunity to show me a Draft of the Report. On a specific date that
will be set in the class, after that date I will not be reviewing any other drafts.
