As a psychiatric nurse practitioner, I perceive that my impact on healthcare policy and legislation will primarily be through advocating for the integration of mental health services into primary care settings. This approach is known as collaborative care, and it has been shown to be effective in improving access to mental health care and reducing healthcare costs (Archer et al., 2019). By collaborating with primary care providers, I can help identify and treat mental health issues early, reducing the need for more intensive and expensive interventions down the line.

Additionally, I plan to advocate for policies that increase access to mental health care for underserved populations, such as those living in rural areas or those with limited financial resources. This can be done through supporting initiatives that increase funding for mental health clinics and programs, as well as expanding telehealth services for mental health care (Sandoval et al., 2021). Overall, I believe that by advocating for these policies and approaches, I can help improve the overall quality of mental health care and reduce the stigma associated with seeking treatment.
