Developing a Philosophy of Nursing

The definition of a philosophy is having a personal and specific outlook and approach you can use to make decisions and take actions. Your nursing philosophy could include your attitudes about working in healthcare facilities, working as part of a team or how you feel about people.

In a 1-page paper, include the following:

o Describe your perspectives about the nursing profession.
o Discuss your personal beliefs about your role as a nurse.
o Explain your approach to caring for others.

Save a copy of your personal nursing philosophy. You will refer to this philosophy throughout your nursing program.

Save your assignment as a Microsoft Word document. (Mac users, please remember to append the ‘.docx’ extension to the filename.) The name of the file should be your first initial and last name, followed by an underscore and the name of the assignment, and an underscore and the date. An example is shown below:

When developing a philosophy of nursing, it is important to consider your beliefs and values about the nursing profession and your role as a nurse. Your philosophy should also include your approach to caring for others.

Here are some questions you may consider when developing your nursing philosophy:

What drew you to the nursing profession? What motivates you to continue in this field?

What are your beliefs about the role of nurses in healthcare? How do you see nurses contributing to patient care?

What are your personal beliefs about caring for others? How do you approach patient care?

What are your ethical and moral values as a nurse? How do these values guide your nursing practice?

How do you approach teamwork and collaboration in the healthcare setting?

How do you incorporate evidence-based practice into your nursing care?

When answering these questions, try to be specific and personal. Your philosophy of nursing should reflect your unique perspective and approach to nursing practice.

Remember to cite any sources you use and follow APA formatting guidelines for your paper. Your philosophy of nursing should be a thoughtful and well-written reflection of your values and beliefs as a nurse.
