There are several chronic health problems with genetic/genomic components that plague the population. These health problems are very difficult and challenging diseases to manage. Evidenced-based nursing practice must include genetic and genomic information when planning patient care. Nurses, through their knowledge and support, play an important role in positive patient outcomes when managing the challenges of these genetically linked diseases.

The journal article I selected is “Genetically competent nursing care for patients with chronic illnesses: An integrative review” by Bekhet, Zauszniewski, and Nakhla (2017). The authors conducted an integrative review of the literature to explore the current state of genetically competent nursing care for patients with chronic illnesses. The authors found that although nurses recognize the importance of genetics and genomics in patient care, they lack the necessary knowledge and skills to provide genetically competent care. The authors suggest that nurses need to receive specialized education and training in genetics and genomics to improve their knowledge and skills.

The nurse’s role in providing care for patients with chronic illnesses and genetic components is to provide genetically competent care.
