Plagiarism can also damage the reputation and career of the plagiarist, as well as the integrity and quality of the academic or professional field.

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, plagiarism is defined as “the act of stealing and passing off (the ideas or words of another) as one’s own” or “the use of (another’s production) without crediting the source”. Plagiarism can take many forms, such as verbatim copying, paraphrasing without citation, or presenting someone else’s work as one’s own. Plagiarism can occur intentionally or unintentionally, but ignorance is not an excuse.

Plagiarism is not only unethical, but also illegal in some cases. The original author of a work has the right to sue a plagiarist for copyright infringement, which is a civil offense that can result in monetary damages or injunctions. In some cases, plagiarism can also be a criminal offense, which can lead to fines or imprisonment. For example, in 2012, a German politician was stripped of his doctoral degree and resigned from his position after he was found guilty of plagiarizing his dissertation (Fotis, n.d.).

Plagiarism can also have severe consequences for the plagiarist’s academic or professional reputation. Students who are caught plagiarizing can face suspension or expulsion from their schools, as well as a permanent record of academic dishonesty that can affect their future opportunities. Academics who are caught plagiarizing can lose their credibility and status in their field, as well as their ability to publish their work. Professionals who are caught plagiarizing can lose their jobs or face legal action from their employers or clients. Journalists, authors, public figures, and researchers are especially vulnerable to plagiarism allegations, as their work is often scrutinized by the public and their peers.

Plagiarism can also harm the quality and integrity of the academic or professional field that relies on original and reliable sources of information and knowledge. Plagiarized research can mislead other researchers and readers, as well as undermine the validity and reliability of the findings. Plagiarized content can also reduce the diversity and creativity of ideas and perspectives in a field, as well as erode the trust and respect among colleagues and collaborators.

Therefore, plagiarism is a serious offense that should be avoided at all costs. To prevent plagiarism, one should always acknowledge and cite the sources of information and ideas that are not one’s own, using an appropriate citation style such as Harvard format. One should also use quotation marks when using exact words from another source, and paraphrase or summarize in one’s own words when using ideas from another source. One should also check one’s work for plagiarism using reliable tools such as iThenticate or Turnitin before submitting it.
