Instructions: In this activity you will meet Mrs. Aneesh Ayman, a 42-year-old woman admitted for abdominal pain for investigation. Mrs.
Ayman was granted refugee status two years ago after fleeing from her home in Syria. Mrs. Ayman’s primary language is Arabic and she is of Muslim faith. Understanding Mrs. Ayman’s cultural needs is critical to the provision of safe and person-centred care.

Introduction
This paper will discuss the cultural needs of Mrs. Aneesh Ayman, a 42-year-old Syrian refugee woman admitted to hospital for abdominal pain investigation. It will argue that providing culturally safe care is essential for ethical and effective nursing practice.
Cultural Needs of Mrs. Aneesh Ayman
Mrs. Ayman’s primary language is Arabic and she practices Islam. Therefore, her key cultural needs include access to an interpreter, halal food options, and privacy and space for religious practices (Al-Krenawi & Graham, 2000; Nursing Council of New Zealand, 2016). The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (2020) mandates that nurses must respect cultural diversity and care for patients in a culturally safe way. In summary, a culturally safe approach is necessary for quality care outcomes, patient wellbeing, ethical practice standards and trust in the healthcare system (Nursing Council of New Zealand, 2016).

In conclusion, understanding Mrs. Ayman’s cultural needs as a Syrian Muslim woman and providing culturally safe care is essential for ethical and effective nursing practice.
