Mistakes do not lead to environmental or economic damage in simulations. Second, VR provides flexibility to simulate varied oil types, spill sizes, weather conditions, and vessel types (ITOPF, 2022). This exposes trainees to a wide range of scenarios to strengthen capabilities for responding to real emergencies. Third, VR objectively tracks trainees’ actions and decisions through performance metrics (Seymour et al., 2002). This identifies strengths, weaknesses, and focused areas for skill enhancement. Fourth, VR systems can be operated on ships or at training centers, overcoming logistical barriers to hands-on practice (Laha et al., 2014). Finally, VR has lower development and operation costs than physical training sites and equipment (Liu et al., 2020).
A VR system developed by Liu et al. (2020) integrated cognitive skills training with physical response tasks to train oil spill responders. Trainees practiced boom deployment while responding to changing conditions and received real-time feedback. Post-training evaluations found significant improvements in knowledge, skills, and self-efficacy compared to traditional methods. As VR technologies advance, more comprehensive simulations can ensure seafarers are optimally prepared for effective spill response leadership.
In summary, VR simulations hold great potential to address key challenges in oil spill response training for seafarers. By immersing trainees in realistic yet safe scenarios, VR drives improvements in procedural skills and decision-making (Laha et al., 2014; Seymour et al., 2002). It provides flexibility to practice a breadth of response conditions while objectively tracking performance metrics (ITOPF, 2022; Seymour et al., 2002). VR also overcomes logistical barriers to hands-on training through lower cost accessibility on ships or at centers (Laha et al., 2014; Liu et al., 2020). With further research and development of comprehensive simulations, VR will likely become a core component of maritime oil spill response training programs to strengthen seafarers’ capabilities in minimizing environmental damage from spills.
