Sources of Nursing Theory
Ideas, questions, and phenomena within the field of nursing serve as the foundational sources for theory development. In the past, nursing heavily relied on other disciplines for theoretical content, allowing external fields, particularly medicine, to dictate nursing’s problems rather than letting nursing generate its own inquiries.
During the early days of nursing education, theoretical content was predominantly drawn from the medical domain, given its more advanced and robust framework. Consequently, medicine exerted significant influence over nursing theory and knowledge domains. Simultaneously, nursing practice was evolving to become a source of theory, with a growing focus on the patient and nursing actions. This shift marked the initial steps in distinguishing nursing from medicine.
As a result, nurses’ experiences became pivotal sources of theory as nursing knowledge was rooted in personal experiences passed down through apprenticeship, teaching, and texts.
In the present era, nursing theory has evolved from various sources:
Role Proliferation: The conceptualization of nursing as a set of functions has become a focal point of investigation, with theory evolving to prepare nurses for various roles.
Basic Sciences: PhD education for nurses in disciplines such as sociology, psychology, anthropology, and physiology introduced ideas from other fields and stimulated novel perspectives on nursing phenomena.
Nursing Process: The examination of processes in nurse-patient relationships and patient care has led to ideas and questions related to problem-solving, priority setting, and decision-making.
Nursing Diagnosis: Labeling and the development of a universal nomenclature for issues within nursing’s domain have paved the way for the first step in theory development, creating conceptual statements about patients’ health status.
Concept Identification: Theory development encourages the identification of core nursing concepts, while the establishment of relationships between these concepts (propositions) has defined a new nursing perspective.
Nursing Philosophies
The identification of sources compatible with nursing work and the nursing perspective has led to the emergence of nursing philosophies. Nursing philosophy comprises assumptions and beliefs that guide the framework of nursing practice. It encompasses both societal and individual human experiences, addressing two central areas of commonality: the nature of human beings and the focus of nursing. These inherent assumptions provide the foundation for nursing philosophy, helping nurses identify nursing’s focus, which differs significantly from that of biomedical sciences.
Nursing philosophies also encourage reflective practice and prompt nursing professionals, from novices to experts, to explore their values regarding health, nursing, and client interactions.
