Age-related changes in urinary function occur due to various physiological alterations in the genitourinary system. The bladder’s capacity decreases, and its ability to empty completely diminishes. Muscle tone in the pelvic floor weakens, and the urethra shortens in both men and women (Bottomley and Lewis, 2024). These changes can lead to increased frequency of urination, nocturia, and a higher risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs).

Common urinary problems in older adults include urinary incontinence, urinary retention, and recurrent UTIs. Urinary incontinence, the involuntary leakage of urine, affects a significant portion of the elderly population and can severely impact quality of life. Urinary retention, the inability to empty the bladder completely, can lead to complications such as UTIs and kidney damage if left untreated. Recurrent UTIs are more common in older adults due to decreased immune function and changes in the urinary tract’s anatomy (Brathwaite, 2023).

Nursing management for age-related urinary disorders requires a comprehensive approach. The first step involves conducting a thorough assessment of the patient’s urinary function, including a detailed history, physical examination, and relevant diagnostic tests. Nurses should use validated tools to assess urinary symptoms and their impact on the patient’s quality of life (Klempere-Sipjagina, Porozovs and Abelkalns, 2023).

Interventions for urinary incontinence may include behavioural modifications such as bladder training and pelvic floor exercises. Nurses play a crucial role in educating patients about these techniques and monitoring their progress. For urinary retention, intermittent catheterization may be necessary, and nurses must ensure proper technique and hygiene to prevent complications (Turgay and Eler, 2023).

Prevention and management of UTIs are essential components of urinary care in older adults. Nurses should encourage adequate hydration, proper hygiene, and regular toileting schedules. In cases where catheterization is necessary, strict adherence to aseptic technique is crucial to minimize the risk of infection (Bao, Wu and Cheng, 2024).

A patient-centred approach is vital in managing urinary disorders in older adults. Nurses should consider the individual’s preferences, lifestyle, and cognitive status when developing care plans. Collaboration with other healthcare professionals, such as urologists and physiotherapists, can enhance the effectiveness of interventions (Ceppi, 2024).

In conclusion, age-related changes in urinary function present significant challenges for older adults and their caregivers. Nurses play a pivotal role in assessing, managing, and educating patients about these changes and associated disorders. By implementing evidence-based interventions and adopting a holistic approach to care, nurses can significantly improve the quality of life for older adults experiencing urinary function disorders.
