Online Learning Versus Classroom Instruction: Which One is Better?

Online learning and classroom instruction are two modes of education that have their own advantages and disadvantages. Online learning is the process of acquiring knowledge and skills through the internet, while classroom instruction is the traditional way of teaching and learning in a physical setting. Both modes of learning have been used for different purposes and audiences, but which one is better for students’ academic performance and satisfaction? This blog post will compare and contrast online learning and classroom instruction based on five criteria: human interaction, access to learning materials, practice while studying, flexibility and cost.

Human Interaction
One of the main differences between online learning and classroom instruction is the level and type of human interaction involved. Classroom instruction involves physical interactions with a teacher and peers, while online learning transfers this component to a virtual environment. So while there is human interaction, it happens online via virtual lectures, virtual discussions, face-to-face video workshops etc. (Stafford Global, 2020).

Some students may prefer the direct and immediate feedback from a teacher and the social support from classmates in a classroom setting, while others may enjoy the autonomy and convenience of online communication. Online learning may also offer more opportunities for collaboration and diversity, as students can interact with peers from different backgrounds, cultures and locations (Michigan State University, 2020).

Access to Learning Materials
Another difference between online learning and classroom instruction is the availability and quality of learning materials. With online courses, students can always access learning materials such as module contents, assignments, lecture materials, podcasts and recorded sessions anytime during the course of their studies. For postgraduate courses module tutors are always there to assist with any questions through emails, messages and Skype calls (Stafford Global, 2020).

With classroom instruction, students have to visit the physical location to speak with tutors face to face, during assigned hours. This can be limiting, especially for working professionals. Classroom instruction may also rely more on textbooks and lectures, which may not be as updated or engaging as online resources. Online learning may also provide more variety and interactivity in learning materials, such as logic puzzles or math puzzles that help students understand concepts on a deeper level (Stafford Global, 2020).

Practice While Studying
A third difference between online learning and classroom instruction is the opportunity to practice while studying. Online learning allows students to fit studies around their work schedules, and to immediately practice new concepts learned by applying them in their current scope of work. This can enhance their skills and knowledge retention, as well as their career prospects (Stafford Global, 2020).

With classroom instruction, students have to leave their job and social commitments to complete a degree programme, and they will only be able to practice the new knowledge once they have re-joined the workforce. This may result in a gap between theory and practice, and a loss of motivation or relevance (Stafford Global, 2020).

Flexibility
A fourth difference between online learning and classroom instruction is the flexibility offered by each mode of learning. Online learning gives students more control over their time, pace and place of study. They can choose when and where to study, how fast or slow to progress, and what topics or modules to focus on. They can also balance their studies with their personal and professional obligations, without having to travel or relocate (eLearning Industry, 2022).

Classroom instruction requires students to follow a fixed schedule, location and curriculum. They have to attend classes at specific times and places, follow the same pace and sequence as other students, and complete all the required courses regardless of their interest or relevance. A fifth difference between online learning and classroom instruction is the cost involved in each mode of learning. Classroom instruction offers more human interaction face-to-face , access to learning materials during assigned hours , practice after studying in theoretical settings , fixed schedule location curriculum ,and higher cost than online learning. The choice between online learning and classroom instruction depends on the students’ preferences, goals and circumstances. Both modes of learning can be effective and satisfying if they are done right.
