Parent Involvement and Its Influence on Student Academic Achievement

Parent involvement is a term that refers to the activities and connections that parents have with their children’s education. Parent involvement is important because it has been shown to have positive effects on student achievement in various domains, such as grades, test scores, attendance, graduation rates and college aspirations.

The Benefits of Parent Involvement

According to the Harvard Family Research Project, parent involvement is associated with higher student achievement. They found that student success was higher in a variety of areas including standardized test scores, grades and teacher ratings (Dreambox Learning). Moreover, parent involvement can enhance students’ motivation, self-esteem, self-efficacy and attitudes toward learning (Garcia). Parent involvement can also foster high educational aspirations for students, as parents who are involved in their children’s education tend to have higher expectations for them (Cai et al.).

The Challenges of Parent Involvement

Despite the benefits of parent involvement, there are also some challenges and barriers that may prevent parents from being fully engaged in their children’s education. Some of these barriers include time constraints, work schedules, transportation issues, language differences, cultural differences, lack of information and trust issues (Danişman). Therefore, it is important for schools to create a welcoming and supportive environment for parents and to provide them with various opportunities and resources to be involved in their children’s education.

The Strategies for Parent Involvement

There are many ways that parents can be involved in their children’s education, depending on their preferences, needs and availability. Some examples of parent involvement strategies are:

– Communicating regularly with teachers and school staff through phone calls, emails, newsletters or conferences.
– Helping students with homework, assignments or projects at home or at school.
– Volunteering in the classroom or at school events such as field trips, fundraisers or extracurricular activities.
– Joining parent-teacher organizations or committees that support the school’s goals and programs.
– Attending workshops or seminars that provide information and guidance on how to support students’ learning and development.
– Advocating for students’ needs and interests at the school or district level.

Conclusion

Parent involvement is a key factor that influences student academic achievement. By being involved in their children’s education, parents can help them improve their performance, motivation, self-esteem and aspirations. However, parent involvement also faces some challenges and barriers that need to be addressed by schools and families. Therefore, it is essential for schools to establish strong partnerships with parents and to offer them various options and resources to be involved in their children’s education.
