However, the ultimate responsibility for a patient’s medical management remains with the supervising or collaborating physician.

While doctors and nurses work together as a team, they interact with patients in distinct ways according to their roles. Physicians generally see patients less frequently than nurses but are responsible for formulating and communicating the overarching plan of care. During visits, doctors perform physical exams, order tests, interpret results, discuss diagnoses, develop treatment strategies, and answer medical questions (American Medical Association, 2022).
Nurses have the most hands-on contact with patients on a daily basis. Doctors work in a variety of settings aligned with their clinical specialty, including private practices, hospitals, long-term care facilities, schools, and public health agencies. For example, pediatricians commonly work in children’s hospitals and private clinics, surgeons operate in hospitals, and family physicians may own private practices (American Medical Association, 2022). Telehealth has also expanded physicians’ ability to care for patients remotely.
Nurses are employed across diverse healthcare environments including hospitals, private physician offices, outpatient clinics, schools, home health agencies, retail health clinics, and more (American Nurses Association, 2022). Some nurses take on non-clinical roles in areas like medical research, public health, health policy, and nursing education. NPs in particular have increased their presence in retail clinics and primary care offices to boost access. The adaptability of nursing allows these professionals to fill critical care gaps.
Collaborative Care Model
In today’s complex healthcare environment, doctors and nurses rely on interprofessional collaboration to achieve optimal patient outcomes. At its best, the doctor-nurse relationship functions as a cooperative team effort. For example, in a hospital setting, nurses communicate directly with physicians to report changes, answer questions, and ensure timely follow-up on care plan elements. Doctors in turn respect nurses as valued colleagues and incorporate their frontline observations into medical decision making.
Studies show collaborative models of care improve various quality metrics like patient satisfaction, treatment adherence, and health status (Parker et al., 2020). When nurses feel empowered and respected as active decision-making partners, they can more effectively support physicians’ work.
