When teaching science to young children, teachers should balance the use of formal educational opportunities for scientific discovery and exploration (e.g., designed classroom experiments with predetermined materials) with informal opportunities (e.g., allowing students to play with materials and observe their physical properties or letting students verbally describe their observations while walking or hiking in nature).

Lesson Summary and Focus:
This lesson will teach students about plant and animal adaptations through a read-aloud of the book “The Tiny Seed” by Eric Carle. Students will use iPads to research different plant and animal adaptations and create a digital presentation to share with the class.
State Learning Standards and Objectives:
Science Standard 2-LS2-2: Develop a simple model that mimics the function of an animal in dispersing seeds or pollinating plants.
Literacy Standard: RL.2.7 Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot.
Objectives:
Students will be able to describe how seeds are dispersed.
Students will be able to identify an animal that helps disperse seeds and explain its role.
Students will be able to effectively communicate their understanding through a digital presentation.

Multiple Means of Representation: The read-aloud and digital research caters to different learning styles. Pictures and videos used in the presentation help English language learners understand concepts.
Multiple Means of Engagement: Students will be actively engaged through the read-aloud, hands-on research, and presenting their findings. Using technology encourages curiosity and exploration of science concepts.
Multiple Means of Expression: Students’ digital presentations will be assessed based on inclusion of an adaptation example, accurate description of its dispersal or pollination role, and effective communication of ideas. Observations during research and presentation will also be used to check understanding.
