Significance of Nurse Leadership

Nurse leadership is the ability to inspire, influence and motivate health care professionals as they work together to achieve their goals. Nurse leaders do more than balance costs, monitor productivity, and maintain patient and staff satisfaction. They serve as role models and influence health care organizations at all levels. A strong nurse leader motivates their colleagues, setting the tone for a safe, civil workplace with a culture of high morale and job retention.

Nurse leadership is important for the nursing profession, especially in times of crisis and change. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted how nurse leaders can respond to a rapidly changing and increasingly complex health care environment. Nurse leaders created new models of care and new workflows using technology such as videoconferencing and telemedicine to communicate with patients and with other health care workers. They also identified ways to prevent shortages from the overuse of scarce resources such as personal protective equipment (PPE).

The role of a nurse leader is to serve as a role model to health care and team members. Being able to effectively communicate the goals and expectations of each team member is key. Nurse leaders also use critical thinking skills to analyze decisions impacting the organization and explain the rationale in a manner that encourages staff support. Additionally, nurse leaders strive for excellence by supporting quality, evidence-based practice and continuing professional development.

Nurse leadership is vital for the advancement of the nursing profession and the improvement of health care outcomes. Nurse leaders can influence health care organizations at various levels and in different settings by displaying the necessary leadership qualities and skills.
