Stepping up from green revolution to blue economy: a new paradigm for poverty eradication and sustainable development in South Asia.

The green revolution was a period of technological innovation that increased food production and reduced poverty in many parts of the world, especially in Asia, from the 1960s to the 1980s. It involved the introduction of high-yielding varieties of cereals, chemical fertilizers, pesticides, irrigation and mechanization. However, the green revolution also had negative impacts on the environment, such as soil degradation, water pollution, biodiversity loss and greenhouse gas emissions. Moreover, it widened the gap between rich and poor farmers, increased social inequalities and failed to address the root causes of hunger and malnutrition. Therefore, there is a need for a new paradigm that can address the challenges of food security, poverty reduction and sustainable development in South Asia in the 21st century.

The blue economy is an emerging concept that promotes the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods and environmental protection. It encompasses sectors such as fisheries, aquaculture, tourism, renewable energy, biotechnology and maritime transport. The blue economy has the potential to contribute to food security, poverty alleviation and climate resilience in South Asia, which has a large coastal population and a rich marine biodiversity. However, the blue economy also faces threats from overexploitation, pollution, climate change and conflicts. Therefore, it requires careful planning, management and governance to ensure its long-term viability and inclusiveness.
