Activity for Assessment:
Who has the control? Texas is a small-government state. Its politicians, of all stripes, bemoan the intrusion of the federal government, yet the 84th legislature acted to impose its will on local government in a number of areas.

Discuss the issue of Local Control from both sides. Consider the following questions:
What are the arguments for and against local control?
Is it hypocritical for the state government to impose its will on the policies of local governments?
Choose one of the following issues, and explore how local control has been handled by the state government. This will be your focus for the assignment:
Fracking regulations
Sanctuary city policies
Ride-sharing regulations (e.g., Uber, Lyft)
Plastic bag bans
Tree-cutting ordinances
In your analysis, address the following:
Provide an overview of the issue and the local control implications.
Examine the state government’s approach and any relevant legislation or court rulings.
Analyze the arguments from both sides (local control advocates and state control advocates).
Evaluate the consequences and implications of the state’s actions on local control.
Present your perspective on whether the state’s approach was justified or an overreach of power.
Your assignment should be well-researched, coherent, and demonstrate a thorough understanding of the local control debate in Texas. Support your analysis with relevant examples, facts, and credible sources.
