The National Academy of Medicine (NAM) report, “The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity,” was released in 2021. The report provides a roadmap for the nursing profession to help the United States achieve health equity by 2030. The report identifies four key areas where nurses can make a difference:

Education: Nurses need to be educated at all levels to meet the demands of the 21st century health care system.
Practice: Nurses need to be full partners in decision-making and practice at all levels of the health care system.
Leadership: Nurses need to be leaders in improving health care delivery and policy.
Research: Nurses need to be involved in research to improve the evidence base for nursing practice.

The report also identifies a number of social determinants of health (SDOH) that contribute to health disparities. SDOH are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age. They include factors such as income, education, housing, employment, and access to health care.

One of the SDOH that has a significant impact on health equity is poverty. Poverty is associated with a number of health problems, including chronic diseases, mental illness, and injuries. People living in poverty are also less likely to have access to preventive care, such as cancer screenings and vaccinations.

Nurses can play a role in improving health equity by addressing SDOH. Nurses can work to increase access to preventive care, provide education about health and wellness, and advocate for policies that promote health equity.

Self-care is also important for nurses to decrease burnout. Burnout is a syndrome characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a reduced sense of personal accomplishment. It is a common problem among nurses, and it can lead to decreased job satisfaction, increased turnover, and decreased patient care.

There are a number of self-care strategies that nurses can use to decrease burnout. These strategies include:

Getting enough sleep
Eating a healthy diet
Exercising regularly
Spending time with loved ones
Practicing relaxation techniques
Seeking professional help if needed

Nurses play a vital role in the health care system. By addressing SDOH and practicing self-care, nurses can help to improve health equity and provide high-quality care to all patients.
