The Nurse’s Evidence-based Practice Manual

Evidence-based practice (EBP) in nursing is a process of using the best available research evidence, clinical expertise, and patient preferences to guide clinical decision-making and improve patient outcomes. EBP is essential for providing high-quality, safe, and cost-effective care to patients and their families. EBP also helps nurses to keep up with the latest developments in their field and enhance their professional competence.

However, implementing EBP in nursing can be challenging for many reasons, such as lack of time, resources, skills, or support. Therefore, nurses need a practical and user-friendly guide to help them apply EBP in their daily practice. This manual aims to provide such a guide, by explaining the steps of EBP, providing examples of EBP in nursing, and offering tips and tools for finding, appraising, and applying evidence.

The manual consists of four main sections:

1. Introduction to EBP: This section defines EBP, explains its importance and benefits, and describes the barriers and facilitators of EBP in nursing.
2. Steps of EBP: This section outlines the five steps of EBP: ask a clinical question, acquire the evidence, appraise the evidence, apply the evidence, and assess the outcomes.
3. Examples of EBP in nursing: This section presents some examples of how nurses have used EBP to improve their practice in various clinical settings and specialties.
4. Resources for EBP: This section provides some useful resources for finding, appraising, and applying evidence, such as databases, websites, journals, libraries, and tools.

By following this manual, nurses can enhance their knowledge and skills in EBP, and ultimately improve the quality of care they provide to their patients.
