What cultural frameworks of “right” and “wrong” did you grow up with?

I grew up in a middle-class family in the United States. My parents were both college-educated and worked in professional careers. They instilled in me a strong sense of right and wrong, based on the values of honesty, integrity, respect, and compassion. They taught me that it is important to be kind and helpful to others, to stand up for what I believe in, and to always do my best.

These values were communicated to me through a variety of ways. My parents talked to me about them, they modeled them in their own lives, and they held me accountable for living up to them. I also learned about these values through my religious upbringing, my education, and my interactions with others.

How did those influence your interpretation of the BACB Code?

The cultural frameworks of “right” and “wrong” that I grew up with have had a significant influence on my interpretation of the BACB Code. The Code is based on the values of respect for autonomy, beneficence, and justice. These are the same values that were instilled in me by my parents and my community.

I promote respect for autonomy in my current practice by:

Informing my clients about their rights and responsibilities.
Obtaining informed consent from my clients before I begin providing services.
Respecting my clients’ right to refuse services.
Listening to my clients’ concerns and preferences.
Working collaboratively with my clients to develop treatment plans that meet their individual needs.

There are always ways to improve. I am always looking for ways to better understand my clients’ perspectives and to better meet their needs. I am also working on becoming more assertive in advocating for my clients’ rights.

How do you promote beneficence in your current practice? Are there ways you could improve?

I promote beneficence in my current practice by:

Always acting in my clients’ best interests.
Providing services that are likely to be effective.
Minimizing the risk of harm to my clients.
Working to improve my clients’ quality of life.

There are always ways to improve. I am always looking for new and innovative ways to help my clients. I am also working on becoming more proactive in identifying and addressing potential risks to my clients.

I promote justice in my current practice by:

Treating all clients with respect and dignity.
