Shall Development of Personal Morals Be Part of School Education?

The question of whether personal morals should be taught in schools has been debated for a long time. Some people argue that moral values are subjective and depend on one’s culture, religion, or personal preferences. Others claim that moral values are universal and essential for human coexistence, peace, and harmony. In this paper, I will argue that personal morals should be part of school education, as they can help students develop emotional intelligence, compassion, and social responsibility.

What Are Personal Morals?

Personal morals are the principles or standards that guide one’s behavior and decisions in various situations. They are based on one’s beliefs, values, and conscience. Personal morals can be influenced by various factors, such as family, friends, society, media, religion, etc. Some examples of personal morals are honesty, respect, kindness, justice, loyalty, etc.

Why Are Personal Morals Important?

Personal morals are important for several reasons. First, they help us to distinguish between right and wrong and to act accordingly. Without personal morals, we would have no sense of direction or purpose in life. Second, they help us to develop emotional intelligence, which is the ability to understand and manage our own emotions and those of others. Emotional intelligence is crucial for building healthy relationships, communicating effectively, resolving conflicts, and coping with stress. Third, they help us to cultivate compassion, which is the feeling of empathy and concern for the suffering of others. Compassion is vital for creating a more humane and caring society, where people help each other and respect diversity. Fourth, they help us to foster social responsibility, which is the awareness of our impact on the environment and the community and the willingness to contribute positively. Social responsibility is necessary for addressing global issues such as poverty, inequality, climate change, etc.

How Can Schools Teach Personal Morals?

Schools can teach personal morals in various ways. One way is to integrate moral values into the curriculum of different subjects, such as literature, history, science, etc. For example, students can learn about moral dilemmas faced by historical figures or fictional characters and discuss how they would solve them. Another way is to provide opportunities for students to practice moral values through extracurricular activities, such as community service, peer mentoring, clubs, etc. For example, students can volunteer at a local shelter or hospital or tutor younger students or newcomers. A third way is to create a positive school climate that promotes moral values through rules, policies, rewards, sanctions, etc. For example, schools can establish codes of conduct that outline expected behaviors and consequences for misconduct or recognize students who demonstrate moral values through awards or praise.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I believe that personal morals should be part of school education because they can help students learn and practice healthy attitudes and behavior that will benefit them and society in the long run. By teaching personal morals in schools, we can prepare our children for their future roles in society as good friends, parents, colleagues,
coworkers,and citizens.
