Define CAM.
CAM refers to medical systems, practices, and products that are not considered part of conventional medicine (National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, 2022).
Describe the patient who uses CAM the most.
Patients who most commonly use CAM tend to be female, middle-aged, college educated, and have above average incomes (Nahin et al., 2016).
List some common misconceptions about CAM.
Common misconceptions about CAM include beliefs that it has been proven effective for all conditions, that there are no risks or drug interactions, or that it always provides a cure (Barnes et al., 2008).
Identify methods of including the use of CAM in patient education.

Methods for including CAM in patient education involve discussing commonly used therapies, potential benefits and risks, and importance of informing medical providers about all treatments used (Coulter & Khorsan, 2020).
Discuss the safe use of CAM.
When using CAM, it is important for patients to purchase products from reliable sources, follow dosage instructions, and inform medical providers of all treatments to avoid dangerous interactions or misdiagnosis (National Cancer Institute, 2019).
List ways in which conventional medicine and CAM can be integrated.
Conventional medicine and CAM can be integrated through referral systems, collaborative practice models, research on efficacy and safety, and educating future healthcare providers (Barnes et al., 2008).
Define ethical theories, ethical principles, and values.
Ethical theories (consequentialism, deontology, virtue ethics) focus on the rightness or wrongness of actions. Principles (autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, justice) guide ethical decisions. Values (compassion, respect) shape professional responsibilities (Beauchamp & Childress, 2019).
Provide examples of ethical issues in patient education and compliance, and describe ways in which an effective professional/patient relationship and a poor health professional/patient relationship can impact these issues.

Examples of ethical issues include informed consent challenges, lack of health literacy, cost barriers, and cultural factors. An effective relationship built on trust, communication and shared decision-making can address these challenges. A poor relationship risks misunderstandings leading to non-adherence or legal/quality issues (Grady, 2015).
Explain what is meant by “ethical patient education practices”.
Ethical patient education practices involve fully informing patients in a respectful, unbiased manner and ensuring their autonomy through the informed consent process (Grady, 2015).

The purpose of informed consent is to respect patient autonomy by providing information about a treatment and obtaining voluntary agreement without coercion (Beauchamp & Childress, 2019).
Discuss what factors determine the patient’s ability to give informed consent.
Factors determining ability include health literacy, language/culture, decision-making capacity, and voluntariness (i.e., free from manipulation, undue influence). Consent validity requires understanding type/purpose of intervention along with risks/benefits (Beauchamp & Childress, 2019).
