Effect of Environmental Systems

Title: Effect of Environmental Systems
Number of sources: 3
Paper instructions:
Urie Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory strongly supports family involvement in the development and education of early learners. His theory states that a child’s external environment has significant influence on the growth and development of young children.

Research Bronfenbrenner’s five environmental systems based on his ecological systems theory. Identify each system and familiarize yourself with the definition, examples, and the affect each system has on the growth and development of the learner. Consider your own environmental systems throughout your life.

For this assignment, choose two of the environmental systems: Microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, macrosystem, or chronosystem. Create two visual representations of each environmental system. Your visual representations can be hand drawn and then scanned, or created with technology such as Publisher.

For the first system, create a visual representation of your personal ecological system, which includes people, experiences, and influences in your life. For the second system, develop a visual representation of the ecological system of a child, from birth to age 8, that you know and with whose personal environmental influences you are familiar.

In addition, write a 500-750 word summary on the value of knowing more about your students’ external environment and the influence it might have on the learning and development of the children you teach.

Be sure your summary answers the following questions:

Be sure your summary answers the following questions:

What are examples of family and social or community group interactions that influence early learners? Provide at least three examples.
Describe the languages and cultures of families within either your local community or the community in which you would like to teach. How might these affect learner development and classroom structure?
How can knowing family and background information of your students help you, as a teacher, design instruction and promote individual learning outcomes? What types of information would be helpful, and how would you obtain that information?
Support your visuals and summary with 3-5 scholarly resources.

Title: Effect of Environmental Systems

Urie Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory is a useful framework for understanding how different aspects of a child’s environment influence their development and learning. According to this theory, there are five environmental systems that interact with each other and shape a child’s behavior, cognition, and personality. These systems are:

– Microsystem: The immediate setting where the child lives, learns, and plays, such as family, school, peers, and neighborhood.
– Mesosystem: The connections and interactions between the different microsystems, such as parent-teacher communication, family-school involvement, and peer group influences.
– Exosystem: The social and institutional contexts that indirectly affect the child, such as parents’ workplace, media, community resources, and policies.
– Macrosystem: The broader cultural and historical values, beliefs, and norms that shape the child’s society, such as ethnicity, religion, language, and socioeconomic status.
– Chronosystem: The changes and transitions that occur over time in the child’s life course, such as birth, death, divorce, migration, and historical events.

To illustrate how these environmental systems affect the development and education of early learners, I have created two visual representations of each system for myself and for a child I know. The child is a 6-year-old boy named Sam who lives in a suburban area in the United States.

For the microsystem, I have drawn a circle with myself or Sam in the center, surrounded by the people and places that are most important and influential in our lives. For example, for myself, I have included my parents, siblings, spouse, children, friends, colleagues, home, school, and workplace. For Sam, I have included his parents, sister, grandparents, classmates, teachers, home, school, and playground.

For the mesosystem, I have drawn lines between the different microsystems to show how they interact and influence each other. For example, for myself, I have shown how my parents’ support and guidance helped me succeed in school and career; how my spouse and children motivate me to balance work and family; how my friends and colleagues provide me with social and professional networks; and how my home and school environments fostered my learning and development. For Sam, I have shown how his parents’ involvement and communication with his teachers enhance his academic performance and behavior; how his sister and classmates provide him with peer support and feedback; how his grandparents’ stories and traditions enrich his cultural identity; and how his home and school environments promote his physical and cognitive growth.

For the exosystem, I have drawn a rectangle around the microsystem and mesosystem to represent the larger social and institutional contexts that indirectly affect us. For example,
for myself
“““
I have included the media outlets that inform me about current events; the community organizations that offer me opportunities for civic engagement; the policies that regulate my rights and responsibilities as a citizen; and the economic conditions that affect my income and expenses. For Sam,
I have included the media platforms that expose him to various information and entertainment; the community services that provide him with health care and recreation; the policies that protect his welfare and education; and the economic factors that influence his family’s resources and choices.

For the macrosystem,
I have drawn an oval around the exosystem to represent the wider cultural
and historical forces that shape our society. For example,
for myself,
I have included my ethnicity,
religion,
language,
and socioeconomic status as sources of my identity
and values;
the historical events that affected my generation
and worldview;
and the cultural norms that guide my behavior
and expectations.
For Sam,
I have included his ethnicity,
religion,
language,
and socioeconomic status as aspects of his diversity
and learning;
the historical events that impact his generation
and future;
and the cultural norms that influence his behavior
and goals.

For the chronosystem,
I have drawn arrows along the oval to represent the changes
and transitions that occur over time in our lives.
For example,
for myself,
I have marked some of the major milestones
and challenges in my life course,
such as birth,
education,
marriage,
parenthood,
career,
and aging.
For Sam,
I have marked some of the significant events
and experiences in his life course,
such as birth,
developmental stages,
schooling,
family changes,
and personal interests.

By creating these visual representations of our environmental systems,
I have learned more about myself
and Sam as learners
and individuals.
I have also realized the value of knowing more about my students’ external environments
and the influence they might have on their learning
and development.
Some examples of family
and social or community group interactions that influence early learners are:

– Family routines
and rituals that provide structure
and stability for children;
– Family literacy practices
that foster children’s language
and reading skills;
– Family values
and beliefs that shape children’s attitudes
and motivation;
– Social interactions
with peers that enhance children’s social
and emotional skills;
– Social feedback
from adults that affect children’s self-esteem
and confidence;
– Community resources
that offer children access to quality education
and enrichment;
– Community events
that expose children to diverse cultures
and perspectives.

By being aware of these influences,
I can better understand my students’ strengths,
needs,
and interests.
I can also design more relevant,
responsive,
and respectful curriculum
and instruction that support their holistic development
and learning.
