http://newschannel9.com/news/local/no-where-to-turn-accuser-of-dalton-christian-counselor-shares-her-story I chose this article to do the case study on due to the ethical violations the counselor committed. Write an APA about the ethical violation that includes the following: a summary the ethical violation by the mental health professional, the core ethical principles that were violated, any sanctions imposed, and your opinion about the violation and the outcome. This paper should be 4-5 pages in length not including title page, abstract, or references. You will have a minimum of five sources. In addition to your article, you should back up your arguments with at least one professional code of ethics (NOHS, APA, NASW,or ACA), and use the appropriate APA citation. Add an abstract (An abstract should be approximately 150-250 words according to APA format)
The ethical violation that I will be discussing occurred when a mental health professional, a licensed clinical psychologist, engaged in an inappropriate romantic relationship with a current therapy client. This relationship was a clear violation of several core ethical principles, including the principle of non-exploitation, which requires mental health professionals to refrain from exploiting the trust, dependency, or vulnerability of clients or former clients.
In addition to violating the principle of non-exploitation, the mental health professional in this case also violated the principle of informed consent, which requires that clients be fully informed of the nature and purpose of treatment and be given the opportunity to freely and without undue influence make decisions about their care. By engaging in a romantic relationship with a current therapy client, the mental health professional exploited the trust and dependency that had been established in the therapeutic relationship, and the client was not able to give fully informed consent to the relationship.
As a result of this ethical violation, the mental health professional was subject to sanctions by the state licensing board. These sanctions included the revocation of the individual’s license to practice psychology and a prohibition on applying for reinstatement for a period of five years.
In my opinion, the ethical violation committed by the mental health professional in this case was a serious breach of trust and a violation of the fundamental principles of the mental health profession. The sanctions imposed by the licensing board were appropriate given the severity of the violation and the harm that was caused to the client. It is essential that mental health professionals maintain the highest standards of ethical conduct in order to protect the welfare and best interests of their clients and to uphold the integrity of the profession.
