Segregation mechanisms such as redlining, blockbusting, panic peddling, restrictive covenants, white flight, and white fight are systemic practices that contribute to racial and economic segregation in neighborhoods. For example, redlining was a practice used by banks and other financial institutions to deny mortgages or loans to people living in predominantly non-white neighborhoods. This practice forced people of color to live in areas that were deemed as undesirable by financial institutions. Blockbusting and panic peddling were practices used by real estate agents to convince white homeowners to sell their homes at a lower price, creating panic and fear of a potential influx of people of color into their neighborhoods. These practices contributed to the rapid and forced movement of people of color into already segregated neighborhoods.

The racial demographic composition of a neighborhood can be influenced by a variety of factors such as access to education, employment, and healthcare, as well as discriminatory practices like those mentioned above.
