To aid in this process, clinicians often use diagnostic tools that help to standardize the diagnostic process and improve diagnostic accuracy. The purpose of this paper is to discuss a specific screening tool used for psychiatric diagnosis, including its use, scoring, and evidence-based rationale. The paper will also develop a treatment plan for patients with positive results from the diagnostic tool, including non-pharmacological and pharmacological approaches, patient education, additional testing required, and follow-up as needed.

Discussion of Tool: Depression in Children and Adolescents
The diagnostic tool selected for this paper is the Children’s Depression Inventory (CDI), which is a self-report questionnaire that assesses symptoms of depression in children and adolescents aged 7-17 years. The CDI is widely used in clinical and research settings and has been found to be a reliable and valid tool for assessing depression in children and adolescents (Klein et al., 2021). The CDI consists of 27 items that assess a range of symptoms, including mood, self-esteem, and interpersonal relationships. The items are rated on a three-point scale, with higher scores indicating greater levels of depression.

The CDI is used to diagnose major depressive disorder (MDD) in children and adolescents, and research has shown that it has good diagnostic accuracy for this purpose (Youngstrom et al., 2016). The CDI can also be used to measure patient response to therapy/treatment, as changes in CDI scores have been found to be associated with changes in depressive symptoms (Klein et al., 2021).

Interpretation of Scoring for the Tool
Scoring the CDI involves adding up the scores for each item to obtain a total score. The total score can range from 0 to 54, with higher scores indicating greater levels of depression. Scores of 13 or higher are considered to be indicative of possible depression, and scores of 19 or higher are suggestive of moderate to severe depression (Youngstrom et al., 2016).

Treatment Plan for Patients with Positive Results from the Tool
For patients with positive results from the CDI, a comprehensive treatment plan should be developed that includes non-pharmacological and pharmacological approaches, patient education, additional testing required, and follow-up as needed.

Non-pharmacological approaches for depression in children and adolescents include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy (IPT), and family therapy (AACAP, 2021). CBT is a type of talk therapy that helps patients to identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to depression. IPT is a type of talk therapy that focuses on improving interpersonal relationships and addressing social stressors that contribute to depression. Family therapy involves working with the patient and their family members to address family-related factors that may be contributing to the patient’s depression.

Pharmacological approaches for depression in children and adolescents include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which are antidepressant medications that have been shown to be effective in treating depression in this population (AACAP, 2021). However, the use of antidepressant medications in children and adolescents requires careful consideration of potential risks and benefits, and should only be prescribed by a qualified healthcare provider.

Patient education is an important component of the treatment plan and should include information about depression, its symptoms, and treatment options. Patients and their families should also be informed about potential side effects of medications and strategies for managing these side effects.

Additional testing may be required to rule out other medical conditions that may be contributing to the patient’s symptoms. For example, thyroid function tests may be ordered to rule out hypothyroidism, which can cause symptoms similar to depression.
